CD Burning Software
CD burning software allows you to save data to a compact disc (CD). The data can be any type of digital files, either stored on a computer hard disk or copied from another CD or other storage media. A CD can store a large amount of information, so it is convenient for backing up copies of files or keeping less frequently accessed pictures, songs or sounds. CDs are a good way to transport files or share them with others. Since most modern computers are equipped with CD drives, information provided on a CD is accessible for most people with a computer. CD burners use different interfaces (for example SCSI, Firewire, IDE and USB connections) so make sure any add-on software is compatible. CD burning software is available for every major computer operating system. A CD disc usually holds about 650 MB of data.
More than software is required to burn a CD, however. In order to burn a CD, someone must have a CD burner and a computer compatible with the burner. Often CD burner hardware comes equipped with simple burning software. However, many people choose to purchase software that supplements their burner by offering more features. It is also important to evaluate the output formats available; some programs have more functions for data backup to CD-ROMs, others are custom designed for people saving audio or image files. CD-ROM discs can be burned only once. Other discs called CD-RWs are rewritable and can be reused for different data; not all CD drives can read data recorded on these discs so it is important to use this for burning only if you have compatible readers.
Some CD burning software has features of specific interest to people who use their burner mostly for audio files. CD burning software can allow you to copy or “rip” music off an existing CD, play songs, edit music and organize files. Many programs allow you to keep the files in the original format or save in a different format, such as MP3 files. Then, it allows creation of new CDs. Many people download MP3 files and archive them on CDs to save storage space on their computers and MP3 players. Or use software to convert MP3 players to .wav files that can be played by any standard CD player. Create custom compilations and collections with this method.
To manage photos and graphic data being burned, some CD burning software has functionality to create photo albums, make slide shows and distribute images. Manage digital video files like MPEGs and Quicktime movies with other CD burning software.
CD burning software often comes with additional functions. To print labels for CDs, look for CD burning software that comes with a label-making program. CD burners create CDs at different speeds, so make sure the software is compatible with the fastest speed available on the CD burner to fully take advantage of it. Programs are also available to repair damaged CDs and recover data; this is a useful feature to consider along with a burning program.
