Cheap Software

Cheap Software

Buying software for your computer can be very expensive. When you purchase a new computer oftentimes a limited amount of software comes preloaded on the machine that you purchase. However, if you would like to add additional software, you will need to purchase software on your own. Some software programs cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

If you're planning on buying software it's well worth your effort to shop around. Software prices can vary greatly from manufacturer to manufacturer, which can make it difficult to find the best deal. There are several things that you can do to save money on software, including shopping directly from the manufacturer, visiting closeout sections at electronics stores and buying software on online auction sites.

Shopping Direct from Manufacturer

Software makers often distribute their software to dealers around the country. The companies that purchase directly from the manufacturer buy the software at a discount and raise the price to make a profit. By ordering directly from the manufacturer, you can avoid the mark up that is often charged by the software dealers.

Sometimes software manufacturers will not sell directly to customers. However, if you have a large bulk order or are interested in purchasing a software license for your home or business, they may work with you. Even if the manufacturer doesn't advertise that they sell software direct to customers, a phone call may reveal that they will work with you.

You can also sometimes find closeout specials on older software from manufacturers. Many times software makers simply update one or two features, making previous versions just as useful as the newly released software. The software can be purchased at a discount to customers making it a great option for those that are looking to save a few dollars.

Shopping Closeouts

Consumer electronic stores always have bargain bins filled with discount software. The software that fills these bins is fully functional, but may be older versions of the software that you'll find on the shelves. This is a great place to pick up deals on software for all purposes.

When you purchase discount software it's important that you check to make sure that the software works with the software that is currently running on your computer. Software programs will usually have information on the back of the box that tells you which types of systems that the software is designed for. Software that is three years or older may not be recognized by a new model computer.

Catalogs also offer discounts on software. Some catalogs specialize in cheap software, offering as much as 25-50% off of prices that you may find in your local electronics store. However, it's important that you figure in shipping costs when you're shopping through catalogs. Sometimes these companies charge hefty shipping fees to help offset the bargain prices.

Shopping Online Auction Sites

Online auction sites like Ebay are a great place to find deals on software. You'll find a nice mix of new and used software, from top manufacturers. The majority of the software that is sold in this environment is new. You can find some discounts in price over what you'll find on the stores.

It's important that you're careful when purchasing software from online auction sites. Make sure you're buying from a reputable seller. The biggest fear of purchasing software from an auction site is buying software that has been illegally copied. This is against the law and could actually get you into trouble if you're caught with software that has been illegally copied.
