Data Recovery Software
Data recovery is the process of retrieving data from a computer when an event has occurred to cause the loss of data. Most often, it is not lost forever, and there are several simple steps (like checking the recycle bin) that a computer user can take to try to recover the missing data. But when those steps are unsuccessful at recovering the missing data, it is sometimes necessary to use data recovery software. You can send your hard drive to a company that specialize in data recovery. However, it is possible for the average computer user to purchase data recovery software and do the recovery himself.
Benefits of Data Recovery Software
It is estimated that about 56 percent of lost data problems are due to hardware or system problems. In this case, it is usually necessary for the hard drive or the whole system shipped to a lab where data recovery can take place. The other 44 percent of data loss problems usually can be done by the computer user in the home or office using data recovery software.
In addition to recovering missing data, data recovery software can also save money and valuable time. It is inexpensive when you compare it to the price of shipping your system to a lab, having the lab work on it, and paying for its return shipment. Data recovery software can also save you valuable time by allowing you to immediately begin retrieving lost data rather than wait for it to be returned from the lab. Sometimes, the time you save by doing it yourself can make the difference between completing an important job on time or not.
How Data Recovery Software Works
Data recovery software finds data that has not really been deleted from the system, but seems as though it has been. When data is first deleted, it is not actually erased -- only the pointer that leads you to it has been erased. The disk still contains the file, but there is no pointer leading to it. It is marked as free space, but until something writes over that space, the data remains and can be recovered. The data recovery software finds the free spaces and searches them until the data is found.
It is important to recover data as quickly as possible after it has been lost. If the user continues to use the computer, the data may be written over because the computer has marked the data's space as free space.
Finally, most data recovery technicians will tell clients that their services would not be necessary, nor would data recovery software be necessary, if computer users would properly back up their data on a regular basis. A good back up system can make data recovery unnecessary.
