Math Software

Math Software

Math software is segmented into two primary categories: math courses and math for business. In either case, you will need to be sure that the software is compatible with your computer's operating system. Math software programs for teaching purposes is generally available in prices ranging from $14.99 to $49.99. Software for business use tends to be more expensive.

Educational Math Software

For families and individual learners wanting to learn basic or advanced math, software is the ideal solution. Most programs are interactive, highly visual, and entertain while teaching; they also include explanations and quizzes. This kind of math software is usually self-paced for independent learning.

MathMedia Educational Software, for instance, has interactive on-screen textbooks for basic math, algebra, geometry, and advanced math. Some math software programs are branded as “homework” help or “tutors.” These include more explanations about solving mathematical problems.

You can also make your child's math education fun with “Gnarly Math.” This software program starts with whole and fraction numbers, then advances to triangles and circles in geometry. As the math concepts become more complicated, the program tackles them with fun activities. For instance, probability involves calculating the likelihood that a batter will get four hits in one game, and trigonometry is related to how astronomers compute the size of the earth.

There is also math software suitable for use by teachers in their classrooms. Statistics, logic, modern algebra, pre-calculus, and partial differential equations are among the courses available. These software programs are usually rated with recommended grades (K-12).

KnowPlay's math software programs bring some fun into the math classroom. Quarter MileMath, for example, displays horse races as a way to teach math. For young children, the software includes the fun-loving Stickybear family which help the child first learn to count, then add, subtract, multiply, and divide.

Business Math Software

Several universities have math software that handles the utmost in mathematical complexities. These include, for example:
  • Analyse-It (statistical software add-in for Microsoft Excel)
  • Equation Software in Java, compass and ruler geometry, combinatorial algorithms,
  • 3D Grapher, which helps you animate 2-D and 3-D equation and table-based graphs
  • Euclidean reality (create geometric figures and distort their angles and lengths)
  • Finite Group Behavior (includes a calculator for complicated calculations using a lot of elements)
  • Logics Workbench (formulas, and functions concerning provability)

  • Some of the university-developed math software programs are in beta and can be obtained free of charge; others permit a 30-day evaluation before purchase.
