PDA Software
A personal digital assistant, or PDA, is a handheld computer that manages the input and output of data.
PDAs can be operated with keypads or styluses and they are powered by software which allows them to manage many functions. These functions usually aid in the efficient completion of business tasks.
Forms and Functions
There are Personal Digital Assistants created by several companies on the market, each with their own features, styles, and functions. Some are even integrated into cellular phones, combining the convenience and functionality of both into one portable device. Most PDAs come loaded with a suite of personal information management software that allows them to perform their basic tasks.
Among these tasks are: storing, maintaining, and allowing easy access to calendars (for keeping track of appointments and other important occasions), address books (for easy access to client and other business contact information), “to-do” lists (to assist in time management and goal achievement), memo pads (to save and keep handy important notes and other information), and expense tracking software (so that company and personal expense records are as accurate and up-to-date as possible).
Some PDAs have software that allow them to do wireless communication, integrate with telephone or fax systems or even computer networks, voice recording, and other features that allow them to facilitate communication with other people, other PDAs, and other computers anywhere in the world.
There is PDA software which allows the device to interact with databases and retrieve documents for perusal and print out hard copies of the documents if necessary. Security software can be included to safeguard sensitive or proprietary information stored in the PDA's memory.
PDA software can also keep project managers and other executives connected to their company's database when then they are on the road, allowing them to access and share information and keep an eye on inventories, deadlines, and expense and resource allocations.
Other Uses
PDA software exists that can customize the device to meet a wide variety of needs and functions. Included among these add-on features are such things as dictionaries (in English and a wide variety of other languages), translation programs, and even handwriting recognition programs.
Entire books, including the Bible, can be downloaded onto a PDA for perusal anytime and anyplace.
PDA software for a wide variety of games--strategy, action, arcade, even classic board games--is available for download, allowing the user to play these games right on the device.
In the medical field, specialized PDA software can keep track of patient appointments, records, test results, referrals and other important information, freeing medical personnel from having to pore through unwieldy folders and files to access information that will best serve the needs of their patients.
