Software Innovation
The software industry is always leading the way in innovation. Software makers typically release software annually, constantly upgrading and improving previous releases of software that they already have on the market. The innovations not only improve the product, but offer customers more features that can be beneficial in the home and office setting.
There are two primary versions of software that you'll see offered from software makers. These include new software that has just been created and upgrades to software versions that are already on the market. There are several key differences between these two types of software.
New Software
New software is designed for a specific purpose. Many times software makers compete with each other and offer similar products. A company may venture into other software categories by producing their own version of a software program. The newly released software is typically more expensive when it is first released.
Software Upgrades
Upgrading software has become a profitable way for software makers to continue to make money on popular versions of their software. Usually software upgrades include just a few minor features that are available for users. Software makers typically release new upgrades every one to two years. Some software makers allow those that purchase the software the ability to upgrade certain features through online download without paying any fees.
Keeping up with Software Innovation
Because software is constantly changing, it's very difficult for customers to keep up with the high speed world of software innovation. It's common to purchase a software program and within a year or two, the program is obsolete. There are several ways that customers can combat these rapid changes.
The best way to ensure that your software will be useful years after you make the purchase is to buy software that can do multiple functions. If you buy a software product that is designed for just one purpose, you'll most likely have to upgrade much sooner. For example, a word processing program will be just as likely to be of use two or three years from now, while a tax software program that is designed for that particular year will be of no use the following year.
Purchasing software with upgrade options is also one way to make sure that your software doesn't get outdated. These software makers allow users to go directly to their company website and download upgrades. These upgrades will bring your software up to date, and save you from having to purchase the latest release of the software.
