Software Store

Software Store

The software store is a phenomenon that recently arose as a result of the ongoing fragmentation of things that people do online. As it becomes increasingly possible for each person to construct an individualized online and offline computer persona, the need has grown for a near infinite variety of software titles to fit the requirements of computer users. It simply is not practical for a department store or even an electronics store to stock every one of the vast amount of available software titles, in multiples. The space such a conglomeration would take up would be prohibitive, and the more unusual titles might only sell once in a while.

Online Stores

The solution was for software retailers to set up online stores. Since software itself, by its nature, can exist in virtual form, many hundreds or even thousands of titles can be simply and economically stored on the retailer's computer hard drive, whether they are popular or rarely requested titles. All that a potential buyer must do is to visit the retailer's virtual storefront (in other words, the Web site) and place an order using the shopping cart or other e-commerce system set up by the retailer.

Customer Service

Many retailers realize that their businesses are very competitive and make efforts to provide good customer service in the hope of repeat and referral business. One example is allowing buyers to download the software in which they are interested, at no charge, and then use it for a limited period of time (usually one month). The software has an embedded expiry date, after which it will no longer function. Should the buyer agree to purchase the software after successfully testing it, he or she can pay for the software and receive by e-mail a serial number or other access key that will remove the restriction and enable unrestricted use of the program.

Sellers

Software is sold by manufacturers, resellers, and private individuals who source their programs from a variety of sources. As with any downloadable program, consider carefully who you are paying and what you are getting. Disreputable sellers may not send you anything after processing your payment. If they do, it is possible for the software to be infected with a virus. If possible, try to deal with professional retailers who have established a reputation for being honest and honorable businesspeople. Shopping at a software store should be as rewarding and worry-free as any other shopping experience.
